Third of Africans corrupt

Dakar - A new poll of Africans in 34 countries across the continent finds that one in three people paid a bribe at least once in the previous year.

In the West African nation of Sierra Leone, some 63% of respondents said they had been forced to pay a bribe. The poll found that some said they needed a government document or wanted to avoid problems with police, but others said they paid bribes in order to receive medical treatment.
Nigerians gave the worst ratings to their government for its battle against graft. Some 82% said the government was doing fairly or very badly.
Pollsters conducted 51 000 face-to-face interviews across the continent.
