A top official from one of China's
top universities who was accused of embezzling tens of millions of pounds
has reportedly been arrested while trying to flee the country using a fake
passport.
Cai Rongsheng, an economics professor and senior admissions officer at
Beijing's Renmin University, was "intercepted" by customs
officials in the southeastern city of Shenzhen as he attempted to travel to
Canada, according to a report in the Legal Evening News.
There are regular flights from Shenzhen's Bao'an International Airport to both
Vancouver and Toronto.
Wang Jian, vice-secretary of the university's disciplinary committee,
confirmed the arrest to the newspaper, which comes amid a high-profile
campaign against graft being spearheaded by president Xi Jinping.
If convicted, Prof Cai's name would join a long list of Communist Party
kleptomaniacs who have been snared while trying to skip the country.
